An assault in a quiet, suburban neighbourhood is one of six 2019 Winnipeg homicides in which no arrests have been made.
Lise Danais was attacked in her Rockcliffe Road home on March 26. Police arrived at the scene around 10:45 a.m., and found the 51-year-old suffering from severe injuries. She was rushed to hospital and pronounced dead.
Hours earlier, Danais had posted online a photo of flowers her teenage son had given her, with a card that read: “To mom — These are for being awesome!”
"This is very difficult," Danais’ father, who asked not to be identified for safety reasons, told the Free Press three days later. "We don’t know for sure what happened… When you’re in the dark, you’re in the dark.”
Three months later, the Winnipeg Police Service has not announced any developments in the case.
The other five homicides this year in which police have yet to announce an arrest include: Justin Nicholas Silicz (June 2), a 32-year-old lawyer whose brother made a teary plea for answers at a June 7 news conference; Pedram Roshaeian (May 24), a 26-year-old international student; 23-year-old Brett Anthony Cadieux (March 12); 23-year-old Chad McKenzie (June 17); and 44-year-old Gabriel Radford Coates (June 19).
Less than halfway through the year, Winnipeg has already surpassed 2018’s homicide number (22), with 24 slayings to date. The most homicides recorded in a single year in recent memory was 41, in 2011.
The violent start to 2019 has reportedly stretched the city’s police force to its limits, with some investigations being handled by major crimes instead of the force’s dedicated homicide unit.
“It’s not a position that we haven’t been in before. This is the nature of police work," WPS spokesman Const. Jay Murray said at a June 3 news conference. "Hopefully, we’ll see that number come down soon."
Last year ended with only one unsolved homicide: 35-year-old Kenneth Wood, who was shot and killed in a North End back lane in the early hours of July 11.
There have been homicides in Winnipeg so far this year.
