Kyle Larson to try Indy 500-Coca-Cola 600 double in 2024

Jenna Fryer, The Associated Press 4 minute read Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Kyle Larson will attempt to race the Indianapolis 500 next year with McLaren Racing in a joint effort with NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick.

The surprise announcement Thursday by McLaren and Hendrick at last gives Larson a path into his dream race. It also means he will become just the fifth driver to run “The Double” on Memorial Day weekend, driving the Indy 500 and Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte, North Carolina, on the same day. John Andretti, Robby Gordon, Tony Stewart and Kurt Busch are the other NASCAR drivers to compete in both races.

Larson has long said he wants to race in the Indy 500 but did not have a viable Chevrolet opportunity for the 2023 running of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” this May.

His entry with McLaren will be co-owned by Hendrick and sponsored by HendrickCars.com, the primary backer of Larson’s ride in NASCAR.

Harvick: ‘It’s just time,’ racer says of 2023 final season

Jenna Fryer, The Associated Press 8 minute read Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Kevin Harvick received the same answer nearly every time he asked another athlete how they decided to retire: Harvick would just know it was time.

The driver thrust onto the global stage when he was named Dale Earnhardt's replacement just days after Earnhardt's fatal 2001 crash will make this 23rd season his last in NASCAR. The 2014 Cup champion heads into his final year tied for ninth on NASCAR's all-time wins list with 60 career victories, 13 consecutive playoff appearances and he's one of the final active drivers from the sport's halcyon days.

“From talking to all the people I’ve talked to, it always came down to the same, ‘Oh, you’ll know, you’ll know it is time, you’ll know the right moment,’” Harvick said in an interview with The Associated Press ahead of his Thursday announcement.

“It’s great to be able to go out on your own terms and plan it how you want it to go, but the biggest thing that sticks out to me is my kids. Being home with them and seeing the impact that you have with them when you are home, being able to be part of that daily process and be that father figure, it’s just time.”

Johnson to drive No. 84 for rebranded Legacy Motor Club

Jenna Fryer, The Associated Press 5 minute read Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2023

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Jimmie Johnson on Wednesday revealed his rebranded NASCAR team and said he will drive the No. 84 — the reverse of his longtime No. 48 — when the seven-time champion competes for Legacy Motor Club.

Legacy Motor Club replaces Petty GMS, the name the two-car Cup team had last year when Maury Gallagher became the primary owner of Richard Petty's organization. Johnson bought into the ownership group in November, and with two of NASCAR's seven-time champions part of the team, the name change was fitting.

“With the addition of Jimmie in an ownership role, we knew change was inevitable with his experience and knowledge,” said Gallagher, who is entering his second year of Cup ownership.

"Our goal is to win races, win championships and to represent our partners by performing at the highest level. The new image of Legacy M.C. is something that will allow us to stand out and foster a team environment that breeds success.”

Andretti partners with General Motors for Cadillac F1 bid

Jenna Fryer, The Associated Press 5 minute read Thursday, Jan. 5, 2023

General Motors will attempt to enter Formula One by partnering with Andretti Global under its Cadillac banner as it supports Michael Andretti's bid to launch a two-car American team.

Andretti has been lobbying the FIA, the governing body for F1, to expand the 20-car grid and join the series after a failed 2021 attempt to purchase Sauber. His petition to expand the grid has been met by fierce resistance from existing F1 teams who have argued an 11th team will dramatically dilute their revenues.

Andretti has continued to move forward with his desire — he's got financial backing to buy into F1, a deep-pocketed sponsor in Gainbridge, a new shop being built in Indiana, and now an engine and manufacturer partner in General Motors, one of the largest automakers in the world.

On Monday, FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem tweeted he has asked his FIA team “to look at launching an Expressions of Interest process for prospective new teams for the FIA F1 World Championship.” It was the first public indicator that F1 might be willing to welcome an 11th team.

Andretti partners with Taylor in sports car expansion

The Associated Press 2 minute read Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2022

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Michael Andretti widened his racing portfolio by partnering with perennial contender Wayne Taylor Racing in the IMSA sports car series on Wednesday.

In partnering with Taylor, Andretti will have a presence at the top level of American sports car racing. It comes ahead of next month’s Rolex 24 at Daytona, which will launch a new era as IMSA will use hybrid engines in its rebranded LMDh top class.

“This is an exciting time for us,” Andretti said. “Re-entering IMSA full time, and at this level, has been a goal of mine. I wanted it to be the right opportunity and at the right time – and we’ve found that.”

Andretti, owner of a four-car team in IndyCar, is also trying to land a spot to field two cars in Formula One.

Next Gen car leveled NASCAR field in 2022, possibly beyond

Mark Long, The Associated Press 4 minute read Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2022

The most meticulously designed and intently controlled racecar in NASCAR history leveled the field in 2022.

The so-called Next Gen car resulted in 19 different winners over 36 races, including five first-timers and two guys who earned their first shot at a championship in the season finale. It provided more exciting racing at most tracks and may have helped improve attendance and television ratings.

Although the unpredictable season ended with a familiar face hoisting the trophy in Phoenix — Joey Logano won his second title with Team Penske — it also showed that anyone can win in stock car racing’s top series.

The biggest teams, the ones with the deepest pockets, no longer had clear-cut advantages like they did in previous decades. The best drivers didn’t have huge edges, either.

F1 drivers to face scrutiny on political, religious displays

The Associated Press 2 minute read Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2022

PARIS (AP) — Formula One drivers will need permission from the sport's governing body to display political or religious statements starting in 2023.

The FIA's international sporting code, which governs the running of motorsport competitions, has been updated with new clauses under “breach of rules.”

It now includes: “The general making and display of political, religious and personal statements or comments notably in violation of the general principle of neutrality promoted by the FIA its statutes, unless previously approved in writing by the FIA for international competitions...”

After F1 champion Lewis Hamilton won the Tuscan Grand Prix in September 2020, he wore a T-shirt featuring the statement “Arrest the cops who killed Breonna Taylor," in reference to the Black woman fatally shot by police in her apartment in Louisville earlier that year.

Deegan lands at ThorSport for another season in Truck Series

The Associated Press 4 minute read Thursday, Dec. 15, 2022

SANDUSKY, Ohio (AP) — Hailie Deegan has another full-time ride in the NASCAR Truck Series, this one with ThorSport Racing.

ThorSport formally added Deegan to its driver lineup Thursday as it announced a manufacturer switch from Toyota to Ford.

The 21-year-old California native will race in the third-tier series for the third consecutive season. She finished a series-best sixth at Talladega Superspeedway in October and was named the series' Most Popular Driver for the second consecutive year, both with David Gilliland Racing.

“I think the last two seasons in trucks I’ve been trying to figure it out and kind of learning the ropes of the Truck Series, and I feel like I’ve good a grasp on it now and understand what you need to be successful as a driver, what the team needs to do for their part and the people you need to have around you," Deegan said. “There’s just a lot of pieces to the puzzle, and I think maybe the last two years it was trying to find those pieces and trying to figure it out.”

He had been racing in Formula One with Ferrari-powered Haas.

“I take this as a new start, and I am just excited and grateful to Toto (Wolff, Mercedes team principal) and everybody involved for putting their trust in me,” Schumacher said. “F1 is such a fascinating world, and you never stop learning, so I look forward to absorbing more knowledge and putting in all my efforts for the benefit of the Mercedes team.”

Ferrari relying on experience with Vasseur as team principal

The Associated Press 3 minute read Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2022

MARANELLO, Italy (AP) — Chasing its first Formula One drivers' title in 15 years, Ferrari is counting on experience and familiarity by hiring Frédéric Vasseur as team principal.

Vasseur was most recently team principal at Sauber and Alfa Romeo and has had an extensive career in F1 and auto racing. His hiring set off a chain reaction with Andreas Seidl leaving McLaren to replace Vasseur as Sauber's new team principal. McLaren, in turn, promoted its executive racing director Andrea Stella to replace Seidl.

That comes a day after Williams announced that its team principal Jost Capito and technical director François-Xavier Demaison were leaving after the team finished last in the constructors’ championship — meaning four of the 10 teams changed leadership in a 24-hour span.

The 54-year-old Vasseur worked with Ferrari lead driver Charles Leclerc at Sauber and the pair already have a solid relationship.

GROVE, England (AP) — Team principal Jost Capito and technical director François-Xavier Demaison are leaving Williams after it finished last in the Formula One constructors' championship.

Capito led the team for two seasons after investment firm Dorilton Capital bought the team in 2020 from the Williams family.

“It has been a huge privilege to lead Williams Racing for the last two seasons and to lay the foundations for the turnaround of this great team. I look forward to watching the team as it continues on its path to future success," Capito said in a statement on Monday.

No reason was given for Capito's departure. The statement included a comment from Dorilton chairman Matthew Savage that the 64-year-old German “postponed his planned retirement” when he took the Williams job.

Thursday Night Thunder: SRX all-star series moves to ESPN

Tony Stewart's all-star summer racing series is moving to ESPN and a new night as the network plans to use SRX to revitalize its “Thursday Night Thunder.”

ESPN said Monday it signed a multi-year agreement with Superstar Racing Experience that begins in July. SRX will air on six consecutive summer nights as “Thursday Night Thunder," which was ESPN's branding for motorsports programming that started in the 1980s.

The old programming showcased grassroots racing from across the country.

“Thursday Night Thunder is where guys like me, who were just starting our careers in USAC, got the chance to make a name for ourselves because of its presence on ESPN,” Stewart said. “It’s great to see Thursday Night Thunder return, but to also be a part of it all over again with SRX.”

US, Belgium named among hosts for 6 F1 sprint races in 2023

The Associated Press 2 minute read Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2022

LONDON (AP) — The United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, and the famed Spa-Francorchamps track in Belgium will host their first sprint races on the Formula One calendar for next season.

F1 had already committed to doubling the number of sprints from three to six and confirmed the hosts Wednesday.

The sprint races take place on Saturdays before the main Grand Prix a day later. Sprints are held over a shorter distance and award fewer points, and also set the grid for the next day's race. They have been credited with making the race weekend as a whole more attractive to TV viewers since they were first trialed in 2021. Qualifying moves from Saturday to Friday when a sprint is on the schedule.

Besides Austin and Spa, the other sprints next season will take place at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the Austrian Grand Prix, the returning Qatar Grand Prix and the Brazilian Grand Prix. Of those, Austria and Brazil hosted two of the three sprints in 2022, and Brazil was also a host in the initial 2021 trial.

Ganassi adds another Kiwi in Armstrong to IndyCar lineup

Jenna Fryer, The Associated Press 5 minute read Friday, Dec. 2, 2022

Marcus Armstrong was a Scott Dixon fan his entire life and when he was 8, the aspiring young racer asked his fellow New Zealander to autograph a helmet visor that he hung on his bedroom wall.

Next year, Armstrong will be Dixon's teammate.

Armstrong on Friday was named the fourth IndyCar driver in the Chip Ganassi Racing lineup and will pilot the No. 11 next season on road and street courses. A driver for the five oval races on the 17-race schedule will be named later.

The No. 11 is essentially the No. 48 that seven-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson drove the last two seasons, with Chip Ganassi making the change to run four cars numbered in sequential order. Indianapolis 500 winner Marcus Ericsson drives the No. 8, six-time champion Dixon drives the No. 9, and 2020 IndyCar champion Alex Palou drives the No. 10.
