Told through letters and flashback/dream sequences, Written in Hot Pink Lipstick… is a love story between two women, spanning 50 years.

The drama begins when River Heights good girl Pam ends up on the wrong side of the tracks, where neighbourhood girl Ellie comes to her rescue during an attempted robbery. From there their love slowly blooms, even as the two live completely apart.

Obviously a labour of love for the amateur cast, which includes the play’s author, Patty Cochrane, they give their all to the project, with mixed results.

Choosing to tell the story through letters read by the women in the present, with flashbacks to the past, requires more skilful execution than is at hand, and the script needs honing to fulfil its potential. Hearts are in the right place here, but more work is needed for true emotional impact.

On March 18, 1961, Elle saved Pamela from being mugged. For the next 18 years, they share the pitfalls of their lives through letters, and fall in love. Then Pam gives in to her family and winds up pregnant and married. After 21 years of silence, they reconnect and find their way back to each other through pain and love.
