Two folk singers, a be-hatted guitar player from Australia (Mark Storen) and his sexpot Norwegian wife (Oda Aunan), are stuck in a toxic relationship and have to get through their set.

She’s got an overwrought Yoko Ono thing going on, he’s sort of a beleaguered Billy Bragg, and together they quarrel and stomp around the stage in between grimly humorous folk songs, some original and one you’ll likely recognize by the Aussie rock band Hoodoo Gurus.

Storen and Aunan can really sing, and the former boasts considerable stage charm. Problem is, it’s not funny enough or dark enough or performance arty enough to be one thing or the other, and the songs aren’t quite sharp enough to keep the momentum going in between quarrels. It really starts to grasp for a point when the bickering turns comic-book violent.

Go if you speak Norwegian.

From the official Fringe Festival program:

Killing Nellie is a hysterical musical and theatrical concert that exposes the dysfunctional relationship of a volatile folk act.

Their fractious live performances are a melting pot of love and language and tend toward the unhinged as this volatile couple endeavour to get through their song list.

If they make it, it will be an experience you will never forget.
