A Winnipeg Free Press photographer snapped up three awards at the News Photographers Association of Canada gala in Vancouver Saturday night.

Mikaela MacKenzie took first and second in the Single Multimedia category, and third in Portrait/Personality.

Her first place for Multimedia was for One Dog at a Time, a video about the dangerous number of stray dogs at northern, reserves including the Chemawawin Cree Nation.

Her second place win was for her story, Sisterly Love, about the Sisters of the Holy Rock singing group.

Free Press editor Paul Samyn said: “Mikaela has already accomplished much in her short time at the Free Press.  She is a remarkably talented visual storyteller and I am so proud that her journalism has been recognized at the national level as the best in the land.”

Mackenzie’s third-place win was for a portrait of a former patient of the Children’s Hospital for a story on the hospital’s television program.

More than 2,000 images were submitted for Canada’s premier photojournalist competition.

Andrew Ryan, who worked as a Free Press intern last summer, was honoured with second place in the Feature category for a shot of a couple taking a nap at the Winnipeg Folk Festival.
