K-12 education review highlights

THE K-12 review commission handed the province 75 recommendations to improve Manitoba’s education system.

The province has indicated it will release a full roadmap of priority actions and timelines for implementation in autumn.

Here are some highlights:

Recommendation 2: Create a Manitoba college of educators to strengthen public interest and confidence in the teaching profession, regulate the training and certification of teachers, and provide accreditation to education faculties, among other things.

Recommendation 11: Establish a new principals association that protects school leaders’ seniority, pension, benefits and other entitlements.

Recommendation 24: Implement mental well-being initiatives to address student anxiety and to develop positive coping strategies and tools to support students dealing with emotions associated with the impact of abuse, trauma, and challenging life events.

Recommendation 25: Ensure every principal in every school takes concrete actions to improve the achievement of Indigenous students.

Recommendation 37: Commit to reducing wait times for identifying and assessing students with special needs, so they receive early intervention.

Recommendation 45: Improve access to nutritious food for Manitoba students and expand health-promoting meal programs.

Recommendation 48: Address disparities and enhance equity of access and educational opportunities for students in rural and northern regions.

Recommendation 68: Consolidate the province’s public school boards into six to eight regional boards composed of five to seven trustees.

Recommendation 74: Conduct a review of the provincial funding formula to ensure equitable distribution.

Recommendation 59: Implement provincial curriculum-based tests for mathematics and literacy at grades 3 or 4, 6 or 7 and 10, with school-level scores made available to the public.
