Police warn residents after reported fentanyl theft

Manitoba RCMP are warning Swan River residents about a potential influx of stolen prescription drugs in the community after a drug-store robbery.

An undisclosed amount of prescription drugs, including fentanyl, were stolen during an overnight robbery from a drugstore in Swan River that was reported to police Thursday. Police arrested a Swan River man and continue to investigate, Manitoba RCMP spokesman Sgt. Bert Paquet said in a news release. He said police are especially concerned that fentanyl was stolen — the powerful prescription painkiller is considered to be up to 100 times more toxic than morphine. Several deaths across western Canada have been blamed on fentanyl overdoses in recent months.

“The Manitoba RCMP wants to warn residents of Swan River and surrounding areas of a potential influx of illicit prescription drugs in the community,” Paquet said in the release.
