Nygård in dispute over reclaimed land at Bahamas home

Winnipeg fashion designer Peter Nygård is back in the news again in the Bahamas.

According to reports the new dispute is over work he’s done at his home to reclaim land.

Driving the matter is the Coalition to Protect Clifton Bay of which his billionaire neighbour Louis Bacon, an American hedge-fund manager, is a supporter. Another supporter is Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is the founder and chairman of Waterkeeper Alliance. The coalition describes the issue on its website.

Nygård and Bacon have been in a legal dispute for several years. Nygård alleges Bacon colluded with others to damage Nygård’s reputation and to remove him from his Lyford Cay home and get his permanent Bahamian residency revoked. Nygård also claims Bacon conspired with the CBC to supply false stories about Nygård, specifically a Fifth Estate story that aired April 9, 2010.

None of the allegations has been proven in court.

Meanwhile, Nygård announced this week his company will make Breast Cancer Awareness a prominent focus of his company.

The announcement followed a recent incident in the Bahamas in which Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan said he will sue a Bahamian newspaper that he claims took his words out of context regarding Nygård. Farrakhan attended an event at Nygård’s home.
