Before and after the festivities, here’s a look at what’s open and closed in Winnipeg for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
SHOPPING
CF Polo Park: open 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 31, 2016. Closed on Jan. 1, 2017.
Grant Park: open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 31, 2016. Closed on Jan. 1, 2017.
St. Vital Shopping Centre: open 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 31, 2016. Closed on Jan. 1, 2017.
Kildonan Place: open 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 31, 2016. Closed on Jan. 1, 2017.
Garden City: open 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 31, 2016. Closed on Jan. 1, 2017.
The Forks Market is open regular hours during the holidays. 7 a.m. – 11 p.m.
Most grocery stores, including Safeway, Sobeys, Superstore and Walmart, are open from 7 a.m. to between 4 and 7 p.m. on Dec. 31, 2016. They will all be closed on New Year’s Day.
LIBATIONS:
Manitoba Liquor Mart stores in Winnipeg operate 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Dec. 31, 2016 and are closed on Jan. 1, 2017 . For details on rural Liquor Mart hours, visit www.LiquorMarts.ca/hours.
Beer vendors and private wine stores often set their own hours on holidays, so Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries suggests the best way to find out if the one near you will be open is to call.
We can confirm the beer vendor at the Osborne Village Motor Inn (160 Osborne Street) is open 365 days a year — even Christmas Day — from 11 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. How do we know this? Let’s just say journalism is thirsty work. You can find phone numbers for the other 47 vendors online here.
ENTERTAINMENT
The Assiniboine Park Zoo is keeping regular hours on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. Both days it’s open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Manitoba Museum is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 31, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Jan. 1.
The Children’s Museum is open 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Dec. 31 and 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 1.
The Winnipeg Art Gallery is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days.
The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. CMHR currently has an exhibit commemorating Canada’s 150th birthday called 1867: Rebellion & Confederation that runs until May 2017.
Movie theatres are open both days.
RECYCLING AND TRASH
There are no changes to recycling and garbage collection as New Year’s Day is on a Sunday.
Both the Brady Road Resource Management Facility and the Brady 4R Winnipeg Depot — the commercial and residential facilities at the Brady Road landfill — are closed on Jan. 1, 2017.
LEISURE ACTIVITIES
All leisure centres are open regular operating hours.
City of Winnipeg swimming pools will be closed on Jan. 1, 2017.
WINNIPEG TRANSIT
Winnipeg Transit will be giving free bus rides on New Year’s Eve starting at 7 p.m. until the end of service. The last bus leaves downtown at approximately 1:38 a.m.
The free ride offer applies to all Regular and Handi-Transit and is sponsored by Manitoba Public Insurance.
On New Year’s Day, buses will operate as a Sunday schedule.

LIBRARIES
All Winnipeg Public Library branches are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 31, 2016 and closed New Year’s Day.

CEMETERIES
Brookside, St. Vital and Transcona cemetery grounds are open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. depending on the weather. Cemetery offices will be closed on New Year’s Day.

GOVERNMENT SERVICES
Civic, provincial and federal offices are closed Jan. 1, 2017.
The Winnipeg Parking Authority closes Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 as per regular operating hours.
The Winnipeg Animal Services Agency keeps regular hours but will be closed Jan. 1, 2017 as it is a statutory holiday.
There is no mail delivery on Sunday, and Canada Post offices are closed, Post offices operated by the private sector will be open according to the hours of service of the host business.
