Shelley Hart new mayor of East St. Paul

Shelley Hart, a former deputy chief with the Winnipeg Police Service, is the new mayor of East St. Paul.

Hart won a fierce battle, edging councilor Barry Schreyer with 1,489 to 1,322 votes. Incumbent Lawrence Morris, finished third with 982 votes.

Also in the capital region, three of the new six-person council in the RM of Springfield are female, after last nights election: Heather Erickson, Shandy Walls, and Tiffany Fell, all newcomers.

One-term Springfield Reeve Jim McCarthy went down to defeat to Bob Bodnaruk, 2,927 to 1,469.

A big name in flood fighting north of Winnipeg, Steve Strang, mayor of St. Clements for 12 years, was defeated. Strang lost by 321 votes to Debbie Fiebelkorn. The result was not a complete surprise as Strang was reported to be in trouble in the municipality.

In West St. Paul, incumbent Bruce Henley edged challenger Dan Garcea, a councilor, by a mere 56 votes, 1,216 to 1,160. The two are long-time rivals. Councillors Georgio Busceti and Ron Michalishyn were defeated by Cheryl Christian and Detlef Hindemith respectively.

In St. Andrews, another ex-cop and former head of security for Canad Inn, George Pike, is the new mayor. He replaces Don Forfar, who did not run.

Some new capital region mayors or reeves include Jackie Hunt in Ritchot (former mayor Bob Stefaniuk did not run), Dwayne Clark in St. Francois Xavier, and Robert Rivard in Tache.

The incumbent mayor for Portage la Prairie, Earl Potter, was defeated by Irvine Ferris, 2,138 to 1,296.

Winkler Mayor Martin Harder chopped down challenger, tae kwon do instructor Wolfgang Schaefer, 1,675 to 737 votes. Eleven rural municipalities had entire councils returned by acclamation this election, and 48 reeves and mayors weren’t contested.
