An investigation into the shooting death of a boy last Thursday on Sagkeeng First Nation is continuing and is “expected to take some time,” RCMP Cpl. Miles Hiebert said.
Mounties said a 14-year-old involved in the shooting death of his brother is not in police custody.
The shooting happened inside a home on Sagkeeng First Nation Thursday just before 7 p.m., and police told reporters “all indications” pointed to a “tragic accident.” Cpl. Hiebert said investigators are still doing interviews on what transpired, as well as looking at “information compiled by our forensic investigators.”
“In some circumstances, after the investigation has been completed, a consultation is sought with the Crown Attorney regarding possible charges. We are very early on in this investigation, and I expect it would be some time before we get to that point,” said Cpl. Hiebert.
“The investigation is continuing, and is expected to take some time.”
The RCMP have not released the boy’s name. The Free Press is not naming the boy in case criminal charges are laid against his brother under the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA).
