New Year’s Eve gala dinner at Centro Caboto Centre

Dust off that tux and/or ballgown and hit the town in style at Centro Caboto Centre’s glitzy gala dinner this Saturday.

The evening gets started at 5:30 p.m. with appetizers, sparkling wine and live jazz, before folks sit down for a seven-course meal, including bottles of wine on the table and a prime rib entrée by Sorrentos at the Caboto.

After an evening of dining, dancing (with music by DJ Antonio) and some bubbly to toast the new year, those still feeling peckish or in need of a pick-me-up will enjoy a late-night buffet and cappuccino/espresso bar.

New Year’s Eve at the Forks

After two years of pandemic-related restrictions, New Year’s Eve at the Forks is back.

The family-friendly festivities get underway at 4 p.m. with indoor and outdoor DJ dance parties featuring DJ OKS (4-7 p.m., Forks Market) and DJs K-Chedda and Co-op (7-8 p.m., CN Stage), who will be joined by fire dancers, hoola hoopers and more.

At 8 p.m., a kid-friendly early countdown to ‘23 will get underway with a pyrotechnics display by Archangel Fireworks Inc., followed by a trio of Manitoba acts — including Tommy Douglas Keenan (a.k.a. the singer/songwriter formerly known as Tom Keenan), The Secret Beach (a.k.a singer/songwriter Micah Erenberg) and Afrobeat act Dr. Henry Band — who will perform pop-up sets around the Forks Market into the evening. Forks Market shops as well as the Food Hall will stay open until midnight; the Common will stay open until 1 a.m.

And, for those who want to get the party started even earlier, tobogganing, skating, and fire pits can be enjoyed in Arctic Glacier Winter Park throughout the day.

Elsewhere, a few Forks-adjacent activities of note: the Canadian Museum for Human Rights will offer free admission for children under 12, and will host crafting with ArtsJunktion from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. as well as live music in Cloud Coffee in the afternoon.

Over at the Manitoba Children’s Museum, Top Hats & Tiaras is the hottest event of the season for the little-kid set, featuring a ginger-ale toast and balloon drop at noon. This event is free with museum admission.

Tom Cochrane rings in a white-hot 2023

Tom Cochrane’s Life Is a Highway stretches from Mozambique to Memphis and also winds its way to the Khyber Pass and Vancouver.

On Saturday night, New Year’s Eve, his famous road will make its way to the Club Regent Event Centre.

That’s where the 69-year-old rocker, who was born in Lynn Lake and has 322 kilometres of northern Manitoba blacktop named after him and Life Is a Highway, will sing a loud farewell to 2022 and join his fans in greeting the first moments of 2023.

Besides his solo material, Cochrane will perform hits from his early days with the group Red Rider, which found the charts in the 1980s with hits such as Lunatic Fringe, White Hot and Big League.

Winnipeg vocalist Jennifer Hanson, who is best known as the longtime anthem singer for the first iteration of the Winnipeg Jets but has been performing rock, blues and jazz songs since the 1990s, opens the show.

NYE Chez Nonsuch — New Beer’s Eve Party

If your dinner plans are pretty much sorted but you’re looking to keep the festive fun going, Nonsuch Brewing Co. has the cure for what ales you.

The New Beer’s Eve Party kicks off at 10 p.m. in their East Exchange District brewery and taproom. Guests get four four-ounce pours of craft beer (including exclusive new releases and some cellar gems) to enjoy, with live music courtesy of DJ Janky Knee.

Nonsuch’s craft cocktail bar will also have some fun sips to buy, as well as a range of beers and food available for purchase. Want to keep the party going really late? All retail canned and bottled beer will be 10 per cent off for your enjoyment later.
