For whatever reason, since the bracket for this year’s competition involving 16 of the city’s best breakfast joints was unveiled, the majority of the emails we’ve received have been about places Winnipeggers miss, period.
Marc, for example, told us he still dreams about hanging out at the Paladin on Rue Des Meurons on Sunday mornings, lazily filling out his crossword puzzle over a plate of pancakes. Sandra mentioned two North End hotspots she wishes were still around, the Windmill on Selkirk Avenue, which appeared on the big screen in the locally shot flick Shall We Dance starring Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez, and Connie’s Corner Café, on Main Street. (We agree; our cholesterol rate goes up just thinking about Connie’s Coureur de Bois brekkie, which came with eggs, ground beef steak, hashbrowns and bannock toast.)
OK, the first week of Munch Madness III is in the books. How close was it? Consider this: the Garwood Grill bested the Oakwood Bistro by a mere six votes, while the difference in the Due North clash that pitted Luda’s vs the Red Eye Diner was a razor-thin three votes. (Every Kelly in town must have voted for downtown mainstay 2 Kelly’s Café. The homey diner in Fort Garry Place garnered the most votes of any Round 1 competitor.)
We’ve re-seeded the Week 1 winners, let’s call them the El-eat Eight, into new pairings. The same as before, voting begins Friday at noon, and remains open until next Thursday at noon. You can vote on every match once per day. Thursday afternoon we’ll tally the results and let you know which four breakfast joints are moving onto the semi-finals.
