MOON ALERT: Avoid shopping or making important decisions until after 9:30 a.m. today. After that, the moon moves from Leo into Virgo.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

You want to work hard and be efficient today. This admirable desire might extend to your health as well, which is why you want to eat better and feel better. Because you’re keen to improve things, anyone or anything that gets in your way will irk you. Easy does it.

Rod Stewart is 78 today.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

You’re in a playful mood! Many of you in a flirtatious mood, as well. (Wink, wink.) Enjoy socializing with others. Accept invitations to party, travel and meet new people. Sports events and playful activities with children will also appeal.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

You’re happy to hunker down at home today if you have a chance. You want to relax in the privacy of familiar surroundings. You might even take a nap. A family discussion with a female relative could be significant. Clear up old business about shared property and inheritances.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Today you have a strong urge to enlighten someone about your ideas. Some of you will teach, write or study more. Enjoy conversations with siblings, relatives and neighbours, because you need the stimulation of talking to someone today. Yada, yada, yada.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

You have a strong attachment to something you own today. Perhaps, you feel you have to defend yourself about something, even though there’s really nothing much at stake. This is because you’re clinging to your values and your possessions. (It’s a fleeting thing.)

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Today the moon is in your sign, which will heighten your emotional responses to others. (Stay chill.) However, it will also slightly increase your good luck compared to all the other signs, which is why today is the day to ask the universe for a favour!

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

If you can manoeuvre things to get some privacy today, or work alone or behind the scenes, this will make you happy. Today you want to withdraw and keep your feelings to yourself, which is why you don’t feel much like socializing. Hey, no biggie.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Today you want to shmooz with others, particularly female colleagues. You want to share your ideas, especially your goals for the future. Why not bounce your ideas off someone to get their feedback? Friends are important to you today.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

People notice you today, whether you are aware of this or not. In fact, some of them seem to know personal details about your private life. Be aware of this in case you have to do some damage control. One can’t be too careful.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Try to do something different today to satisfy your urge for a little adventure. You feel restless and eager to learn something new or talk to someone who is different. If you can travel or take a trip — that would be perfect. (Even a short trip.)

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

One of the greatest illusions is the happiness of others. We often think others are happy or they have their life together, which is why we might envy them or we feel personally diminished. (“I’m navel lint.”) You may feel these things today, which is why you’re focused on what others own.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

Conflict with others will be much more emotional today because the moon is opposite your sign. Ideally, listen carefully to someone today, and be willing to compromise or go more than halfway to meet them. In two weeks, when the moon is in your sign, they can go more than halfway to meet you.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Singer-songwriter Rod Stewart (1945) shares your birthday today. You have a winning personality, which makes people like you. You are compassionate and have humanitarian instincts. You have a stoic mask and hide your deepest feelings. This year is the final year of a nine-year cycle, which means it’s time to let go of whatever is holding you back.

Opinion: Don’t let your dreams for future be undermined

Maureen Scurfield 5 minute read Monday, Dec 23, 2024

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: My boyfriend tried to give me an engagement ring two weeks ago so “we” could show it off to all the relatives on Christmas Day. He was so excited, presenting me with the big diamond ring.

I was shocked, but I had to refuse and broke his heart. It was a horrible thing to see the tears in his eyes.

But how could I say yes? I’m only 20 and have big plans for my life. I’m finishing my degree in Manitoba, then I want to move to another province and get my masters, which should, hopefully, get me a great job. I want to make good money so I can travel the world, which is my biggest dream.

My boyfriend can’t pretend he didn’t know of my plans. His proposal was a calculated move to stop me in my tracks, but I won’t change my plans for him, even though he’s a great guy.

Opinion: Don’t assume mom’s obnoxiousness runs in the family

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: My youngest daughter brought her new boyfriend home, and here comes trouble. I know the boy’s loud and nasty mother from the hockey rink. She’s what people call a pit bull with lipstick. She constantly screams at her son and all the other players. Sometimes the coaches have to speak to her.

Well, her son better not be anything like his loudmouth mother and shouldn’t have any ideas about giving any nasty attitude to my daughter. I would prefer my baby get away from that whole family, but my husband says I shouldn’t interfere. What do you think?

— Worried mom, southern Manitoba

Dear Worried: Ask your daughter what the boyfriend thinks of his mother’s behaviour at the rink. He’s probably embarrassed. Don’t assume this young this hockey player is a carbon copy of his abrasive mother.

TORONTO - More than a dozen people were injured but no one died when a Delta Air Lines flight from Minneapolis crashed and flipped over on the tarmac at Toronto's Pearson International Airport on Monday afternoon.

Paramedics said out of 80 people aboard Delta Air Lines flight 4819, at least three people, including a child, were sent to hospital with critical but non-life-threatening injuries. Others were reported to have minor injuries.

During a brief media statement on Monday evening, the airport authority's CEO Deborah Flint praised the work of emergency crews in helping the 76 passengers and four crew members to safety.

Opinion: After rock shock, it really is time to take stock

Maureen Scurfield 5 minute read Yesterday at 8:00 AM UTC

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: Recently, I got down on bended knee and gave my girlfriend an engagement ring as a total surprise.

It was a beautiful diamond in a style I’ve seen her admire on other women’s fingers, so I knew she would love it.

She wore it for a week steady, but oddly, she didn’t show it around much — not even to her family and friends. Then she shocked me by saying that she wasn’t sure about getting married. She said it didn’t work the last time she tried it. She apologized and gave me the ring back.

What? I’m not a man who cries, but I was shocked and broke down bawling. Through my tears I told her that I thought she loved me and asked her if that was true.

Opinion: Painful engagement sting for blindsided ex

Maureen Scurfield 3 minute read Friday, Nov 29, 2024

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: I finally started getting over my girlfriend (in her mid-20s) after she moved out west this past summer for a job. But this week I got a real shock. I heard from a mutual friend she is already engaged to some other guy.

She’s telling mutual friends she’s over the moon about it, knowing they’ll tell me, of course. What’s that supposed to mean? She used to say she would never marry a guy unless there was big money involved. I was too polite to ask what this guy is worth.

When she lived in Winnipeg, she would say she loved me “best,” but never that she loved me “only.”

I’m 32 and ready for real love and want to settle down, but she had a problem with being faithful to any guy. To get around me, she used to say she only cheated with women, so that hardly counted.

Opinion: Bleeding Canada towards annexation

Deveryn Ross 4 minute read Yesterday at 8:00 AM UTC

Over the past month, Canadians have struggled to discern the strategic objective behind U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to impose a 25 per cent tariff on Canadian steel and aluminum exports into the U.S., as well as the (currently paused) tariff on all Canadian goods, products and commodities exported to the U.S.
