Josh Frey-Sam will tell you writing was not his cup of tea while growing up; he dreamed of sharing his sports opinions on camera. While in journalism school, however, he developed a penchant for storytelling in the traditional sense.
Josh joined the Free Press sports squad just weeks after graduating from Red River College’s Creative Communications program in 2022.
During his time in CreComm, he served as the school’s sports editor while freelancing for the Stonewall Teulon Tribune. Internships with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and The Globe and Mail and a brief stint at the Brandon Sun preceded his big break at the Free Press.
Still a seedling in the industry, Josh is an outspoken individual with grand aspirations of making a difference in his community, especially in the lives of minorities. He’s been a leader on social justice issues and public reform and is always searching for a story that represents those who are underprivileged.
A die-hard football fan at his core (admittedly an NFL snob before covering the CFL), Josh takes pride in his ability to speak to a wide range of sports, including golf, hockey, tennis, curling, basketball and baseball.
He happily welcomes a spirited sports debate any day of the week.
When he’s not arguing about hot-button topics in sports, Josh can be found desperately trying to prolong what little time he has left of his prime athletic years in the gym and on the football field.
