Hey there, time traveller!

So, you’re heading out of town for a few days, and you have to leave your beloved pet behind. Here are five tips to ensure your pet will be in good hands while you’re away.
Find the right fit
A meet and greet will give you and your pet a chance to get comfortable with the potential sitter, and vice versa, before you sign on for pet-sitting services.
Just because your Facebook friend’s cousin’s neighbour dog sits from time to time, it doesn’t mean they’re qualified to care for your pet. You’ll want to find a pet sitter who has experience with the species, breed, age, activity level, health and temperament of your pet, or at least someone who you’re confident can handle your pet’s needs.
On pet-sitting sites like Rover.com, you can narrow your search based on the criteria that’s important to you. You’ll also have the extra assurance, knowing these pet sitters have been vetted based on their experience and safety practices—and they’re often backed by a company guarantee that will help you cover vet bills, should the unexpected occur.
Still, don’t be afraid to ask for references so you can confirm a potential pet sitter will be the right fit for you and your pet.
Organize a meet and greet
A potential pet sitter might seem great on paper (or these days, online), but it could be a different story when they interact with your pet.
A meet and greet will give you and your pet a chance to get comfortable with the potential sitter, and vice versa, before you sign on for pet-sitting services.
Set your pet up for success
Clear communication with your pet sitter will ensure your pet — and pet sitter — are set up for success.
“Talk through concerns, your pet’s unique needs, and any scheduling details with your sitter prior to drop off,” says Kristin Sandberg, Rover spokesperson.
That includes food, walks, medication, and that favourite toy your pet won’t sleep without.
With these details outlined from the get-go, you’re ensuring a more positive experience for all involved.
Get a little help from technology
There are all sorts of technologies out there to keep us connected to our loved ones when we’re apart, and that includes our loved ones of the furry (or scaly) variety.
From in-home camera systems like Nest Cam or Blink Indoor, to the Furbo camera that lets you see, talk to, and even give your dog treats, you can check in with your pet whether you’re at work or out of town. Although, you might consider letting your pet sitter know you’ll be checking in via video, for their own comfort and privacy.
Keep in contact
Provide your pet sitter with a way to reach you, so you can keep in contact while you’re away.
You should also leave the phone number for your veterinary clinic and a local emergency contact, should your pet sitter ever need them.
With a little prep work, you’ll be able to travel without worry and set your pet — and pet sitter — up for success. Just don’t forget to pick up a souvenir treat or two.
