Manitobans can unbuckle their seat belts, get their popcorn out and watch a movie on the big screen — all from the comfort of their personal vehicle.

A series of drive-in movies will begin Thursday outside the Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport with a showing of the comedy Date Night in the airport’s economy parking lot.

Movies will play nightly on a five metre by nine metre HD LED screen until June 28. Schedules will vary based on movie length and time in between showings.

The drive-in series is a way for people to safely enjoy a movie amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, said Garry Hale, the president of AVentPro, a company partnering with CAA Manitoba to produce the series.

“During the pandemic that we’re in, there are no options for families to go and have some entertainment,” Hale said.

The drive-in theatre means people don’t need to leave their car, even for concessions, Hale said.

People attending a movie can get CAA Summer Drive-In Series’ app to order food and drinks. They can place their orders of mini donuts, popcorn and drinks on the app. The snacks will be delivered to their vehicle in a bin. Customers take their items out of the bin, and the bin is sanitized before its next use.

There will be 18 toilets at the drive-in theatre. However, the province is encouraging people not to use them unless unavoidable, and to follow COVID-19 safety precautions a maximum of 25 people will be permitted to queue for them.

Moviegoers can use an app to stream the movie’s sound in their car.

“You plug it in to your car like you would to take a phone call,” Hale said. “The sound comes through and you watch the movie on the big screen.”

The movie list wasn’t confirmed Monday afternoon, but it would be announced on the social media accounts of CAA Manitoba and the Winnipeg Airports Authority, Hale said. Tickets are available online for $30 for the first film, 2010’s Date Night with Tina Fey and Steve Carell.

Hale said he expects 200 vehicles will be able to fit in the parking lot during a movie.

Some of the profits will go toward the Health Sciences Centre Foundation COVID-19 Crisis Response Fund, Winnipeg Harvest and United Way Winnipeg.
