Winnipeg has once again taken the top spot when it comes to Culture Days.

Each year, the national Culture Days organization releases an infographic of the top 10 that ranks the participating communities based on registered activities during Culture Days weekend. For the sixth year in a row, Winnipeg is first place in both the overall ranking and population 500,000-plus categories.

“Ranking No. 1 for the sixth year in a row with Flin Flon stepping ahead of Toronto to take the No. 2 spot for the most Culture Days activities overall in Canada is testament to the value Manitoba citizens place on arts and culture and to the creativity of the artists and organizations that produce the events,” said Nicole Matiation, co-chair of Culture Days Manitoba and Nuit Blanche Winnipeg.

“Culture Days is an opportunity for artists, organizations and citizens to come together to celebrate the crucial role that arts and culture play in Manitoba, both in terms of quality of life and economic growth.”

Flin Flon is also a regular on the national list, but this year has edged out Toronto to take the No. 2 spot overall and, as per usual, is at the top of the population under 50,000 category. Portage la Prairie came in third in that category and eighth overall.

Flin Flon celebrated its achievement by posting a “We beat Toronto” message on the local community centre’s electronic message board outside of the building.

“The thing that I love most about Culture Days is that it is an opportunity in our country to stand together as partners as we celebrate our vibrant, talented and irrepressible arts and culture scene,” said Crystal Kolt, co-ordinator of Flin Flon’s Culture Days events and member of the board of directors for Culture Days Manitoba.

Culture Days, which took place from Sept. 28-30, is an annual, weekend-long event that raises “awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of all Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities.”
