The federal Liberal Party had its best fundraising year in Manitoba in 2014 in at least a decade, raising significantly more than the federal NDP here despite having only one federal seat in the province.

The Liberals raised $402,672 in Manitoba in 2014 from donors who gave more than $200 that year, compared to the NDP’s $282,054 – comparable to their performance in the last few years. The Conservatives remained the fundraising leaders in the province, however, raising $687,591 in 2014

The numbers come from Elections Canada’s online database of political donations, where parties are required to report the name and address of anyone giving over $200.

For the Conservatives, Portage-Lisgar, Winnipeg South Centre and Provencher were the top sources of donations – all held by incumbent Conservative MPs. Winnipeg South Centre, however, gave more money to the Liberal Party in 2014 – $116,301 versus $80,483 for the Conservatives.

Incumbent Tory MP Joyce Bateman is running against prominent Liberal candidate Jim Carr in that riding.

The riding was also the top source of funds for the NDP, although it gave a comparatively lower amount of $44,153. The NDP has not increased its fundraising performance in the province, and it has traditionally raised lower amounts than the Liberals and Conservatives nationally.

Party support bases

Political donation data going back to 2004 shows how the source of donations have changed, and how parties have improved their support in certain ridings. The Liberals, for example, have expanded their fundraising support in areas around Corydon Avenue, Wellington Crescent and Old Tuxedo.

The Conservatives had a more spread-out fundraising support base, with donors in suburban areas like St. James and Tuxedo.

The base of support for the NDP was in Osborne Village and Wolseley (which is part of Winnipeg Centre, popular NDP MP Pat Martin’s riding). Their fundraising has held steady in Winnipeg since 2014, with no hikes in the past few years and no new bases of support. Winnipeg Centre
