Scott Gibbons

Associate Editor Enterprise

Scott joined the Winnipeg Free Press in 2001 on the copy desk.

Within a year, he was night sports editor, followed by stints as deputy night editor and then night editor. In the summer of 2012, he saw the light — literally daylight — leaving night shifts for his current position as associate editor enterprise.

Scott oversees long-term projects, the 49.8 weekend section and, since the fall of 2020, the Arts & Life team.

Newsprint has been in his blood since Grade 11 when he landed a part-time job at the Brandon Sun working in the editorial department where, in a pre-technology dark age, he cut and pasted that day’s stories and photos for filing and compiled the paper’s daily looking-back-in history column. He obtained his first byline weeks after finishing high school, writing about the city’s playground paddling pool program.

Upon graduation from Red River College’s Creative Communications program, he produced two videos for Pine Fall’s Abitibi-Price paper mill where, you guessed it, newsprint was produced.

Following a 2.5-year run at the best named weekly newspaper in the province — the former Scratching River Post — Scott returned to his hometown paper where he covered everything from sports, health, education and crime.

Away from work, he’s either running, cycling or woodworking and always walking his family’s two dogs.
