Man City defender Mendy found not guilty of sexual offenses

The Associated Press 2 minute read Friday, Jan. 13, 2023

CHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy was found not guilty Friday of six counts of rape and one of sexual assault.

Jurors at Chester Crown Court in northwest England could not reach verdicts on two other allegations against Mendy — one of attempted rape and another of rape — and were discharged.

Prosecutors said they will seek a retrial on the counts the jury could not reach verdicts at the end of a months-long trial.

Mendy, 28, covered his face with both hands and was gently rocking back and forth as the jury foreman delivered the verdicts in a hushed courtroom, Britain's Press Association reported. The not-guilty verdicts related to four young women or teenagers.

Shakhtar, Russian clubs lose FIFA transfer rule cases at CAS

The Associated Press 2 minute read Friday, Jan. 13, 2023

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — Shakhtar Donetsk and eight Russian soccer clubs lost their appeals Friday against FIFA emergency transfer rules that let foreign players and coaches suspend their contracts during Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

In separate rulings by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, Ukraine's Shakhtar had its appeal dismissed in a case heard in December which sought 50 million euros ($42 million) compensation from FIFA.

The Russian clubs, led by champion Zenit St. Petersburg, faced FIFA in November at sport’s highest court. Two of the three judges who ruled in that case also heard the Shakhtar appeal.

Both appeals challenged a FIFA decision last June to extend emergency transfer rules for the entire 2022-23 season that were first applied last March for the rest of that season.

Chelsea welcomes FA clampdown on offensive chants

The Associated Press 2 minute read Friday, Jan. 13, 2023

LONDON (AP) — Chelsea welcomed the English Football Association's decision to make a homophobic chant aimed at its supporters a punishable offense, calling it a “step in the right direction” on Friday.

The FA announced on Wednesday that chants of “Rent Boy,” which have been directed at Chelsea fans by rival supporters, are now considered a breach of its rules.

It has written to all Premier League clubs and clubs throughout English soccer to enforce the point and attempt to stamp out discriminatory behavior.

“The ‘Rent Boy’ chant is intolerable and has no place in football or anywhere else,” Chelsea said in a statement. “That opposition clubs can now face disciplinary action if their supporters engage in this discriminatory and offensive behavior is a step in the right direction. Everyone who chooses to participate in this chant must know their actions have consequences.”

New US owner of Bournemouth invests in French club Lorient

The Associated Press 1 minute read Friday, Jan. 13, 2023

BOURNEMOUTH, England (AP) — The new American owner of Premier League team Bournemouth has acquired a minority share in French club Lorient as part of what he is calling a “multi-club ownership strategy.”

The Black Knight Football and Entertainment consortium fronted by Bill Foley, which owns the Vegas Golden Knights in the NHL and bought Bournemouth in December, said Friday the deal with Lorient “provides the opportunity to invest additional capital after this season.”

Lorient is in sixth place in the French league and bidding to qualify for European competition next season.

“Loïc Fery has successfully built a best-in-class football club,” Foley said of Lorient’s president, “and will be a great partner as we build BKFE into a leading multi-club football operator.”

China’s reopened borders raise hopes for soccer resurgence

John Duerden, The Associated Press 3 minute read Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023

After three years of isolation and financial struggles in Chinese soccer, the country is reopening its borders and economy to the outside world. With it, frustrated fans, financially challenged clubs and unpaid players in the Chinese Super League might receive some long-awaited good news.

The 2022 season was unrecognizable from the 2019 edition, the last before COVID-19 hit. Then the league had an average attendance of over 24,000, the highest in Asia, and a number of big-name foreign imports.

From 2020 onwards, Beijing’s “zero-COVID” policy, designed to stamp out the virus, meant that teams mostly played in empty stadiums at centralized venues. Players were stuck in bio-secure bubbles for months on end and international stars, unable to enter the country, were released from contracts.

It also meant little ticket, broadcast or sponsorship revenue for clubs. In 2021, defending champion Jiangsu FC folded and several other clubs have struggled to pay players.

Angel City FC took teenage forward Alyssa Thompson with the first pick in the National Women's Soccer League draft Thursday.

The 18-year-old Thompson, named the 2021 Gatorade High School Soccer Player of the Year after scoring 48 goals in 18 games for Harvard-Westlake School in L.A., made her debut with the U.S. senior team last fall.

“Alyssa Thompson, for us, is a phenom and generational player,” said Angel City GM Angela Hucles Mangano. “She’s a player who can make an immediate impact, but she’s also young and can develop and look to be a player that we're building a future off of, too.”

Thompson had verbally committed to Stanford but opted to forgo her college eligibility to go straight to the pro level.

Alyssa Thompson was the top pick Thursday in the National Women’s Soccer League draft by Angel City, becoming the first high school player to be selected in the history of the league.

Thompson, an 18-year-old forward out of Harvard-Westlake High School in Los Angeles, declared her eligibility for the draft late last week. She initially committed to Stanford.

“It's a crazy feeling,” said Thompson, who watched the draft from her home in Los Angeles. “And I'm so happy that I get to be surrounded by my friends and family. I'm just really excited. My heart's beating really fast.”

Thompson made her debut with the U.S. senior team last year while also playing for the under-19 Total Futbol Academy boys’ team in MLS NEXT. Thompson and her younger sister Giselle also became the first high school players to sign a name, image and likeness deal with Nike last year.

Neil Davidson, The Canadian Press 2 minute read Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023

Toronto FC has signed veteran Norwegian forward Adama Diomande through 2024 with an option for 2025.

Diomande, who turns 33 next month, was with Norway's Odds BK most recently but previously played for Toronto head coach Bob Bradley at Norway's Stabaek (2015) and Los Angeles FC (2018).

"He is a proven striker with vast experience playing in MLS and Europe. His smart runs, athletic presence, and skill to finish in the box will immediately impact our attack,” Bradley said in a statement.

Bradley, who doubles as TFC's sporting director, had been looking to add to a strike force that features Jesus Jimenez, Ayo Akinola, Deandre Kerr and Jordan Perruzza with Italian stars Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi manning the wings.

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — Chelsea newcomer David Datro Fofana is the subject of a legal dispute between two other clubs over the Ivory Coast international’s move to Norway two years ago.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport said Thursday it has registered a case filed by Ivorian club Abidjan City against Fofana and Norwegian club Molde.

Norwegian soccer magazine Josimar reported that Abidjan is alleging that it had Fofana already under contract when he signed for Molde, and that the club was not compensated for the transfer.

“The parties are exchanging written submissions,” the court based in Lausanne, Switzerland, said in a statement, adding “a hearing date has not been set yet.”

ROME (AP) — Substitute Paulo Dybala scored to send Roma into the Italian Cup quarterfinals with a 1-0 win over second-division club Genoa on Thursday.

Dybala was brought on at halftime and he changed the game as Roma’s attack instantly looked more dangerous.

He scored what was to prove the winner in the 64th minute, gathering a pass from Gianluca Mancini and weaving his way towards goal, beating several players before firing into the roof of the net from a tight angle.

Lorenzo Pellegrini had hit the post in the first half with Roma’s only real goalscoring opportunity.

Study: MLS posts more gains in hiring women for 2022 season

Aaron Beard, The Associated Press 3 minute read Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023

A diversity report examining racial and gender hiring in Major League Soccer reported another boost in scores for the hiring of women, marking a second straight year of significant gains after four years of declines.

Thursday's report card from The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport (TIDES) at Central Florida assigned an overall B-plus grade, with an A for racial hiring and a B for gender hiring. The report examined a range of positions at the league headquarters and within franchises using data from August that covered the 2022 season.

The overall and racial-hiring grades were similar to 2021, but the gender-hiring data stood out for the second straight year.

MLS earned a 69.9 score in that category for 2020, the league’s lowest gender score since 2007. But the league jumped to 74.7 points in 2021 (a C letter grade), then jumped another 6.8 percentage points to an 81.2 for this year’s report card to extend that positive trajectory another year.

Joao Felix sent off on Chelsea debut in 2-1 loss to Fulham

The Associated Press 4 minute read Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023

LONDON (AP) — João Félix was sent off on his Chelsea debut for a studs-first lunge as his new team lost 2-1 at Fulham in the Premier League to fall deeper into crisis on Thursday.

The Portugal forward looked disconsolate after being shown a straight red card in the 58th minute for his dangerous challenge on Kenny Tete that caught the Fulham right back just below his right knee.

Félix, who joined on loan from Atletico Madrid for the rest of the season on Wednesday, was having an impressive game until his sending-off, making surging runs, delivering incisive passes and showing some neat tricks and flicks.

He won’t be able to showcase them again until Feb. 11 as he will now miss league games against Crystal Palace, Liverpool and Fulham. With Félix having joined on a deal costing Chelsea a reported $790,000 a week taking in wages and the loan fee, it is a costly error for both the club and for under-pressure manager Graham Potter.

Marseille looks to extend winning run and pressure Lens

Jerome Pugmire, The Associated Press 4 minute read Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023

PARIS (AP) — Marseille is on a five-game winning run and well poised to put pressure on Lens in the race for second place in the French league.

With Paris Saint-Germain comfortably leading the league, the more realistic ambition for Marseille is to finish second and qualify automatically for next season's Champions League.

The goals are flowing for Marseille with 10 scored in the past three matches, while the defense looks stable and the midfield has been boosted by the arrival of Ruslan Malinovskyi.

The Ukrainian joined on loan from Atalanta until the end of the season with an option to make the move permanent, and made his debut in Wednesday’s 2-0 win at Troyes.

Ronaldo left off FIFA award list headed by Messi, Mbappé

The Associated Press 3 minute read Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023

ZURICH (AP) — Cristiano Ronaldo was left off the the 14-player shortlist for the annual Best FIFA Men’s Player award for the first time, with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé among those selected.

Ronaldo, who was released by Manchester United and benched by Portugal during the World Cup, won the FIFA award the first two times it was handed out — in 2016 and 2017 — and was among the three finalists the following three years. This was the first time he was not even selected as a contender by a FIFA-appointed expert panel.

The award was rebranded in 2016 following a six-year period where the former FIFA World Player of the Year Award had merged with the annual Ballon d'Or.

Ronaldo finished seventh in the voting last year, when Robert Lewandowski won for the second time in a row ahead of Messi and Mohamed Salah. The 37-year-old Portuguese star joined Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr last month, seemingly marking the end of his European club career.
