WHL Roundup: Thunderbirds outduel Ice in battle between conference leaders

WINNIPEG - Nico Myatovic scored the game-winning goal at 3:26 of overtime as the Seattle Thunderbirds edged the Winnipeg Ice 4-3 on Wednesday in a battle between the league's conference leaders.

Reid Schaefer, with two goals, and Kyle Crnkovic also scored for Seattle (29-6-1-1). Thomas Milic made 30 saves.

Matthew Savoie also had two goals, while Conor Geekie added the other for Winnipeg (29-5-1). Daniel Hauser stopped 28 shots.

The Ice outshot the Thunderbirds 33-32 in the contest. However, Winnipeg failed to get a shot on goal in the extra period.

KELOWNA, B.C. - Ty Young stopped all 30 shots he faced and the Prince George Cougars blanked the Kelowna Rockets 3-0 in Western Hockey League play on Tuesday.

The Cougars (17-17-3) opened the scoring with a goal from Cole Dubinsky 16:21 into the first period and Blake Eastman added a short-handed tally before the end of the frame.

Viliam Kmec made it 3-0 with his second goal of the season 14:31 into the second.

Talyn Boyko stopped 34-of-37 shots for the Rockets (13-21-3).

REGINA - The Regina Pats welcomed Connor Bedard home from the world junior hockey championship on Sunday, and the MVP for Team Canada responded by scoring four goals and adding two assists as the Pats defeated the Calgary Hitmen 6-2 in Western Hockey League action.

Bedard, a key figure in Canada's gold-medal victory in Halifax and Moncton, is expected to be the top pick in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft.

Tanner Howe and Alexander Suzdalev also scored for the Pats (19-19-1-1), who were outshot 44-27.

Carson Wetsch and Jacob Wright scored for the Hitmen (21-12-3-1).

THE Winnipeg Ice acquired forward Easton Armstrong from the Regina Pats in exchange for defenceman Omen Harmacy on Saturday.

Armstrong, 19, is a bruising 6-3 204-pound winger who has managed steady offensive production with 13 goals and 22 points to his name this season.

The Los Angeles product joins an Ice squad that is looking down at the rest of the Western Hockey League’s eastern conference with a 28-5-0 record.

The Silvertips went 2-for-6 on the power play and outshot the Blazers 41-24. Kamloops was 1-for-2 with the man advantage.

The Blades led 2-0 with 10 minutes left in the third period, but Oliver Tulk (10:19) and Sean Tschigerl (15:04) tied the game for the Hitmen (19-11-3-1) and forced overtime.

Brandon Lisowsky and Vaughn Watterodt scored for the Blades (25-6-2-0). Both teams had 30 shots on net.

The Blades are listed fifth in the Canadian Hockey League's top-10 rankings this week.

Earlier in the day, the ICE acquired Ottawa Senators' prospect Carson Latimer in a deal with the Prince Albert Raiders. Heading to Saskatchewan are forward Aiden Oiring and two third-round draft picks (2024 and 2025 drafts).
