4 minute read Friday, Jul. 1, 2022This year, Canada Day at The Forks transformed into what organizers called a reimagined version of the national celebration.
In the wake of thousands of potential unmarked graves being discovered last year on residential school grounds, and after consultations with Winnipeg’s Indigenous community, The Forks replaced its typical Canada Day festivities with a new slate of culturally influenced events.
Events at The Forks included a variety of Indigenous ceremonies, performances by more than 150 musicians, 10 culturally influenced cultural pop-up shows and the usual smattering of food trucks and treats.
Here are some of the pictures from the day.

Photos by Mikaela MacKenzie 4 minute read Friday, Jul. 1, 2022The winters of my childhood were long, long seasons. We lived in three places — the school, the church and the skating-rink — but our life was on the skating-rink.
So begins Roch Carrier’s beloved book The Hockey Sweater, which recounts his childhood memory and the furor that arose following the unintended delivery of a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey to his home in Quebec, where Maurice ‘Rocket’ Richard and the Montreal Canadiens ruled.
The classic tale later became a widely popular National Film Board animated short and was adapted for the stage.
The musical production kicks off Rainbow Stage’s season.

Jessica Lee 8 minute read Sunday, May. 22, 2022In late February, when the bombs started falling in the middle of the night on Kharkiv, Ukraine, Olena Hrushytska, 37, her son, Oleksandr (Sasha) Hrushytskyi, 6, and her fiancé, Sergiy Adamenko, 41, left their home and made their way to a subway station where many others were seeking shelter from the blasts.
They were accompanied by Adamenko’s parents and Hrushytska’s mom, a young friend, three dogs and a cat.
