Canada Day in Winnipeg will look a lot different in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. It’s still a day off work for most, but annual events such as the Osborne Village street party and Canada Day concert at The Forks have been cancelled in light of public health orders limiting gathering sizes.
The Free Press does not publish a July 1 print edition, but an e-edition of the paper will be available at winnipegfreepress.com.
Many businesses and government services change their hours for the Canada Day holiday. Here’s a selection:
SHOPPING
Shopping malls and grocery stores are closed Canada Day.
The Forks Market is open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.; although, individual stores may have differing hours.
Manitoba Liquor Mart stores in Winnipeg operate from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. For details on exceptions and rural Liquor Mart hours, visit www.LiquorMarts.ca/hours.
Beer vendors and private wine stores set their own hours for the holiday, so Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Corp. suggests the best way to find out if the one near you will be open is to call.
ENTERTAINMENT
The Assiniboine Park Zoo is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Winnipeg Art Gallery is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The gallery’s newest exhibit is Into the Light by Manitoba-based Group of Seven member Lionel LeMoine FitzGerald. The WAG recently opened its rooftop sculpture garden, which is accessible with admission.
The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Current exhibits include Time to Act: Rohingya Voices, Rights on the Job, and Ododo Wa: Stories of Girls in War.
RECYCLING AND TRASH
Recycling and garbage will be picked up as usual for those with a Wednesday collection day.
The Brady Road landfill is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. for residential customers and 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. for commercial customers.
LEISURE ACTIVITIES
The Crescent Drive, Harbour View, John Blumberg, Kildonan Park and Windsor Park golf courses will be open from dawn to dusk.
City of Winnipeg spray pads are open 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Outdoor swimming and wading pools open July 3.
WINNIPEG TRANSIT
On Canada Day, buses will operate on a Sunday schedule.

LIBRARIES
All Winnipeg Public Library branches are closed July 1.
CEMETERIES
Brookside, St. Vital and Transcona cemetery grounds are open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Cemetery offices will be closed on the holiday.

GOVERNMENT SERVICES
Civic, provincial and federal offices are closed Canada Day.
The Winnipeg Parking Authority is closed July 1.
The Winnipeg Animal Services Agency is closed Canada Day.
There is no mail delivery July 1. Canada Post offices are closed, but post offices operated by the private sector will be open according to the hours of service of the host business.
