Winnipeg will get a second brush with musical royalty this fall when Sir Paul McCartney returns to the city to play the Bell MTS Place on Sept. 28.
“We’ve always had such a fantastic time playing shows in Canada. We can’t wait to return in September for what should be another special run of shows,” McCartney says in a Live Nation Canada release issued Monday morning.
The 76-year-old former Beatle played a sold-out Investors Group Field in 2013 — and the excitement created for the Winnipeg concert helped convince promoters to include the city as one of four Canadian stops on McCartney’s Freshen Up tour.
“Not only is Sir Paul a legend, he is a performer dedicated to delivering an amazing concert experience each and every time he takes the stage,” says Live Nation Canada president Paul Haagenson. “For him to include Winnipeg on this small run of concert dates demonstrates his love for music fans in the city. His last performance in Winnipeg was truly epic, and his return will be equally as unforgettable.”
The concert announcement follows on the heels of recent pop culture appearances by the former Beatle, all of which are building the hype for McCartney’s new album, Egypt Station, which will be released on Sept. 7.
The most notable was his June 21 appearance on the Late Late Show with James Corden. The talk show spent a week in England, highlighted by a stop in Liverpool, where McCartney starred in Corden’s wildly successful Carpool Karaoke skit. McCartney gave the talk-show host a tour of his hometown, featuring sites such as Penny Lane and the house he grew up in, and sang hits such as Drive My Car, Penny Lane and Let it Be.
The 23-minute video has chalked up more than 100 million views on Facebook and YouTube.
Expect McCartney to perform a three-hour show filled with Beatles hits that defined the 1960s as well as several songs from his post-Beatle career with Wings and as a solo artist. He’ll also have new songs from Egypt Station to introduce.
Tickets go on sale Friday, July 13 at 10 a.m. at Ticketmaster, although there is a presale for American Express credit card holders that begins Tuesday, July 10 at 10 a.m. Prices start at $39.50 plus service charges.
