St. Vital voters go to the polls

The race to replace former St. Vital councillor Gord Steeves wrap ups tonight.

Polls are open until 8 p.m., as voters in Winnipeg’s most populous ward will cast their ballot for one of 10 candidates who is vying to replace the longtime councillor.

Steeves resigned from council to run unsuccessfully as a candidate in last month’s provincial election.

Here’s a breakdown of who’s running for a council seat in St. Vital:

 

Mike Ducharme: Insurance broker and former school trustee.

 

Marty Green: Education student and former cable-access TV personality.

 

Steven Hennessey: MLCC loss-prevention co-ordinator and civic committee member.

 

Hammad Khan: E-commerce consultant and president of Association of Pakistani Canadians.

 

Brian Mayes: Lawyer and Workers Compensation Board member.

 

Greg Nordman: Coffee salesman and youth soccer/hockey director.

 

Carl Osato: Cineplex Odeon manager and property manager.

 

Terry Wachniak: Auctioneer and former city councillor.

 

Beverley Watson: Entrepreneur and chairwoman of Women’s Enterprise Centre.

 

Harry Wolbert: Anti-poverty activist and outreach worker for the disabled.

 

The winner has the potential to affect the balance of power on city council. Steeves was a staunch ally of Mayor Sam Katz.

Eight other candidates are vying for a vacancy on the Louis Riel school board, and seven candidates will compete for a spot on the Winnipeg School Division board. The city will steam live results on its website: winnipeg.ca.
