Brian Mayes wins city council byelection in St. Vital

Lawyer Brian Mayes has won the St. Vital byelection race to replace former councillor Gord Steeves.

City of Winnipeg election results show Mayes received 3,623 votes, with 35 out of 35 polls reporting.

Former school trustee Mike Ducharme received 2,229 votes and Greg Nordman came in third, with 723, according to live results on the City of Winnipeg website.

New Democrat Mayes is a litigator and real-estate lawyer who also sits on the board at the Deposit Guarantee Corporation and the Workers Compensation Board, coaches soccer and sits on a daycare board. He also served on the board of governors for Brandon University and served as a Brandon school division trustee from 2006 to 2010.

A total of 10 candidates were vying to replace Steeves, including Marty Green, Steven Hennessey, Hammad Khan, Carl Osato, Terry Wachniak, Beverley Watson and Harry Wolbert.

Steeves resigned from council to run unsuccessfully as a candidate in last month’s provincial election.

St. Vital is Winnipeg’s most populous municipal ward, with more than 50,000 residents.

Voter turnout in St. Vital was 20 per cent, according to City of Winnipeg deputy clerk Marc Lemoine. Overall voter turnout in the St. Vital byelection and the trustee races for the Louis Riel and Winnipeg school divisions was 12.7 per cent, he said.

Mark Wasyliw won the race for school trustee for the Winnipeg School Division.

Colleen Mayer won the race for school trustee for the Louis Riel School Division.

Voter turnout is usually fairly poor for municipal byelections. Only 22 per cent of eligible River Heights-Fort Garry voters bothered to mark a ballot during the St. Patrick’s Day byelection in March 2009.
