The Winnipeg Blue Bombers made one final move, and arguably their biggest, ahead of training camp Sunday, signing veteran linebacker Adam Bighill to a one-year deal.
Bighill was recently released by the New Orleans Saints and was rumoured to be testing out other NFL opportunities. The Bombers had been interested in his services, but acquiring the 29-year-old seemed more of a long shot, as many believed if Bighill was to return to the CFL it would be with B.C., where he spent six seasons with the Lions (2011-16).
That all changed Saturday, of course, and now the Bombers have one of the best defensive players in the CFL on their club for the 2018 season.
“The opportunity to add such a dynamic defensive player to our lineup was one that we simply could not pass up,” Bombers general manager Kyle Walters said in a release. “Not only is he one of the most dominant linebackers in the CFL, but by all accounts, his work ethic and leadership are two of his strongest attributes, making him a perfect fit for our locker room. We’re very excited to welcome Adam to the organization.”
The addition of Bighill is a major boost to the Bombers’ linebackers group. He can play both the weak side and middle linebacker positions, though the Bombers haven’t confirmed their plan for him just yet. He won’t be part of camp Sunday but is expected to arrive within the next few days, once he settles a few things at his home in New Orleans.
Bighill was named the CFL’s top defensive player in 2015, following a year where he racked up a league-best 117 tackles. He’s also a four-time CFL all-star and has one Grey Cup, in 2011, which came in a win over the Bombers.
After a stellar season with the Lions in 2016, Bighill, a native of Montesano, W.A., signed with the Saints for the 2017 NFL season. He made the opening-day roster and appeared in three games with New Orleans. He was waived in May and after a workout with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, signed with the Bombers.
