Goldeyes fall to Redhawks in Game 3

It wasn’t meant to be for the Winnipeg Goldeyes.

The Fish fell to the Fargo-Moorhead 7-3 in a do-or-die Game 3 at Newman Outdoor Field Saturday evening, ending their 2022 season.

Despite taking the first game of the series, the Winnipeg club lost league-MVP Max Murphy after he broke his leg in a gruesome home-plate collision. The Goldeyes mustered six runs in that win, but couldn’t eclipse the three-run mark in the ensuing two games.

Pitcher Freisis Adames toed the rubber for the Fish in the fateful matchup, conceding four hits and three runs while striking out three batters in five innings of work.

The Redhawks got out of the blocks quickly, driving in three runs in the first inning. The Fish eventually knotted the game in the third frame but were bested in the later innings when the pen arms came out.

Typically reliable reliever Tasker Strobel, who had a rough Game 1 at Shaw Park, hurled for just 1.1 innings, yet gave up three hits and three runs across eight batters.

The Redhawks’ three runs in the seventh inning were padded by a lone run in the eighth frame. Fargo’s Peter Maris continued his stellar series, going 3-4 with one walk and an RBI in the contest.

While it was short-lived, the Goldeyes enjoyed their first post-season appearance since 2017, when they won a second-straight championship.
