Maples voters sent NDP candidate Mintu Sandhu to Broadway on election night.

In 2017, the district had been represented by independent MLA Mohinder Saran, who was kicked out of the NDP caucus after allegations of harassment and did not run for re-election.

Sandhu will be working on behalf of one of the most diverse areas in northwest Winnipeg and will be part of one of the most diverse Legislative Assemblies in the history of Manitoba.

“I know the community very well. Diversity is good. I thank the people of The Maples for selecting me as their representative,” Sandhu said on election night. “At first, I was kind of nervous. There’s a lot to learn, and I will lear, and I will take the issues of The Maples to the legislature.”

Sandhu has lived in The Maples for 30 years. He is a graduate of Maples Collegiate and hasraised his kids in the area. Since his high school graduation, Sandhu has been working to modernize transportation and create jobs in Manitoba.

Now that he’s holding The Maples seat, he wants to further his community service. He said he will make decisions based on what will improve people’s lives and create a good future for the province’s children. He added he is mainly focused on helping bring the Seven Oaks General Hospital ER back.

“There’s lots of work to be done here in The Maples. We heard on the doorsteps that health care is the number one issue and we will take that to fight Brian Pallister,” he said at his campaign office after results came in.

“We will be fighting hard to keep whatever is there for the Seven Oaks (General Hospital). We want to have the ER open, but I’m sure Pallister is not going to do that, but we will do it for the next government, and we will bring the ER at Seven Oaks back.”

With 29 out of 36 polls reporting, Sandhu was leading with 1,750 votes. In second place was Manitoba Liberal candidate Deep Brar, with 1,282 votes. The PC’s Aman Sandhu received 1,195 votes, and the Green Party of Manitoba’s Kiran Gill received 192.
