Winnipeg police have charged two people accused in a carjacking and attempted armed robbery Monday night.

Police, including the dog unit and helicopter, were called to the 500 block of St. Mary’s Road at 11:44 p.m., where a man and woman reportedly armed with a gun were chasing another man, the Winnipeg Police Service said Wednesday.

The caller told police they had heard a gunshot.

Officers were flagged down at the scene by a witness who reported a woman on the hood of a car nearby, police said.

Officers located a man in his 20s, who told them a woman had stepped in front of his vehicle and then jumped on top of it on St. Mary’s Road, before a man walked up and stole his car at gunpoint.

While officers were on the scene, police said, the stolen vehicle drove past and collided with a utility pole.

Two suspects fled but were soon arrested nearby. Officers seized a sawed-off .22-calibre rifle and an airsoft handgun.

Major crimes investigators determined the first victim, a man in his 30s, had been walking in the area when two suspects confronted him at gunpoint and demanded his property. He ran and a shot rang out, police said.

He wasn’t injured and did not initially call police.

A 27-year-old Winnipeg man has been charged with two counts each of armed robbery with a firearm and pointing a firearm, as well as discharging a firearm, five other weapons offences, and mischief under $5,000.

A 26-year-old Winnipeg woman is facing two counts each of armed robbery with a firearm and pointing a firearm and a weapons possession charge. She was released on an undertaking.
