Sewage dumped into river

A power failure caused about 580,000 litres of untreated sewage to be dumped into the Assiniboine River on Thursday.

A city report notes a power failure alarm was triggered at 10 a.m. at the Ash lift station. A mobile generator was taken to the site by 11:05 a.m. and the crew managed to stop the overflow at 11:45 a.m.

“Our staff responded very quickly to the site in order to mitigate the discharge and provide back-up power,” said Lisa Marquardson, a city spokesperson, in an email.

For about 1 hour and 45 minutes, the outage led to a spill at the combined sewer outfall at 1059 Wellington Cres.

Manitoba Hydro restored the main power supply by 1:10 p.m.
