City hall budget process chugs along

Another city department budget has passed through council’s review process without any recommendation for changes.

Councillors on the property and development committee Monday unanimously endorsed the planning department’s proposed $121-million 2017 budget.

Planning department officials said while only $45.6 million of the budget is taxpayer dollars — the rest is raised through fees.

The tax-supported share of the department’s budget is largely unchanged from 2016, which amounted to $45.5 million.

Monday’s review was the fourth by a council committee in the city’s 2017 budget review process.

Budgets for the departments of public works, water and waste, community services, and Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service, have all been endorsed without changes.

The Winnipeg Police Board will review the police budget today, the last civic department to go through the process.

Mayor Brian Bowman and his executive policy committee will spend its Wednesday meeting hearing last-minute appeals from councillors and the public on any budget changes.

EPC will meet again Friday, when any changes to the 2017 operating and capital budget will be made before the operating and capital budgets are presented to council for approval Dec. 13.
