What’s open and closed on Remembrance Day

This Friday, Manitobans will join the rest of Canada in honouring the country’s armed forces, including those who’ve died, veterans and active members.

Many businesses and government services change their hours on Remembrance Day.

Here’s a selection:

SHOPPING

Most malls are open from 1 p.m to 9 p.m. Kildonan Place is open from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The Forks Market is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., with food vendors operating regular hours. Retailers will open at 1 p.m.

Most grocery stores, including Safeway, Superstore and Walmart are open from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Manitoba Liquor Mart stores in Winnipeg operate from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. or 10 p.m., depending on the location. For details on exceptions and rural Liquor Mart hours, visit www.LiquorMarts.ca/hours.

Beer vendors and private wine stores set their own hours for Remembrance Day, so Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries suggests the best way to find out if the one near you will be open is to call there.

ENTERTAINMENT

The Assiniboine Park Zoo is open from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The Manitoba Museum is open from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The Children’s Museum is open from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Winnipeg Art Gallery is open from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Robert Houle: Red is Beautiful, an exhibition on the 50-year retrospective of the Anishinaabe Saulteaux contemporary artist, remains open.

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is open from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. and is offering free admission.

Movie theatres are showing films in the afternoon.

RECYCLING AND TRASH

Recycling and garbage will not be collected on Remembrance Day. Winnipeggers whose collection day falls on Friday or after should put their carts and yard waste out a day later this week.

The Brady Road landfill, and all 4R Winnipeg Depots, are closed on Remembrance Day.

LEISURE ACTIVITIES

All leisure centres will be closed.

City of Winnipeg swimming pools will be closed, except for Margaret Grant and Pan Am pools, which will open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

WINNIPEG TRANSIT

Buses will operate on a Sunday schedule on Friday. Transit drivers will pull over and stop their buses for one minute of silence at 11 a.m.

Transit will be free to veterans and active members of the armed forces, including cadets and reservists, plus one companion. Military members must don their uniform or present military identification or a CF1 card when boarding for the free service.

LIBRARIES

All Winnipeg Public Library branches are closed Friday.

CEMETERIES

Brookside, St. Vital and Transcona cemetery grounds are open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

GOVERNMENT SERVICES

Civic, provincial and federal offices are closed Friday.

The Winnipeg Parking Authority’s parking store will be closed. The Millennium Library parkade will be open, and all on-street paid parking will be free. However, time limits will still be in effect.

The Winnipeg Animal Services Agency will be closed.

There is no mail delivery Friday. Canada Post offices are closed, but post offices operated by the private sector will be open according to the hours of service of the host business.
