MONDAY marks Canada’s 152nd birthday, so whether you plan to wave a flag, go to a fireworks display or just stay home, there’s plenty of options for things to see and do.

Many government services and businesses change their hours on the holiday Monday. Here’s a selection:

SHOPPING

Major shopping malls such as CF Polo Park, Garden City Shopping Centre, Kildonan Place, Grant Park Shopping Centre, Outlet Collection Winnipeg and St. Vital Centre are closed.

The Forks Market is open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Most grocery stores, including Safeway, Sobeys, Superstore and Walmart, are closed.

Most Manitoba Liquor Mart stores in Winnipeg are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For details on exceptions and rural Liquor Mart hours, visit LiquorMarts.ca/hours. Beer vendors and private wine stores set their own hours for the holiday, so Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Corporation suggests the best way to find out if the one near you will be open is to call.

ENTERTAINMENT

The Assiniboine Park Zoo is open Monday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Manitoba Museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Children’s Museum is open 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Winnipeg Art Gallery is closed.

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Movie theatres are open.

RECYCLING AND TRASH

Recycling, garbage and yard waste will be collected as normally scheduled on the Canada Day holiday, for those with Monday as their collection day.

The Brady Road landfill is open 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Brady 4R Depot is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Pacific and Panet 4R Depots are closed.

LEISURE ACTIVITIES

All leisure centres are closed.

All municipal golf courses will be open on Canada Day from dawn to dusk, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

All City of Winnipeg indoor swimming pools are closed.

All City of Winnipeg outdoor pools will be open (weather permitting); operating hours vary by pool.

Six wading pools will be open (weather permitting): Central Park, Dakota Park, Machray Park, Shaughnessy Park, West Kildonan Memorial CC and Westdale. Operating hours vary by wading pool; most are open from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

All spray pads will be open 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

WINNIPEG TRANSIT

There is a free Canada Day shuttle service on Monday linking The Forks and Osborne Village, operating from noon until 12 a.m.

Extra Route 11 Portage buses are operating between The Forks and Assiniboine Park from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Regular transit fares apply.

Post-fireworks (The Forks) departures buses will be available on Main Street between York Avenue and Graham Avenue.

On Monday, Transit buses will operate on a Sunday schedule. For route and schedule details, visit Winnipeg Transit’s website or contact 311.

STREET CLOSURES

Several streets in Osborne Village will be closed for the Canada Day festivities beginning Sunday at 6 a.m. and ending at 2 a.m. on Tuesday.

Closures will include:

  • Osborne Street from River Avenue to McMillan Avenue at Confusion Corner
  • Stradbrook Avenue from Nassau Street North to Scott Street
  • McMillan Avenue from Osborne Street to the back lane west of Osborne Street
  • Gertrude Avenue from Scott Street to Nassau Street North
  • Wardlaw Avenue from Scott Street to Nassau Street North

People will still be able to walk in these areas but motorists are advised to use an alternate route.

LIBRARIES

All Winnipeg Public Library branches are closed. For detailed information on library hours, call 311 or visit the Winnipeg Public Library website.

CEMETERIES

Cemetery grounds at Brookside, St. Vital and Transcona cemeteries will be open for visitation from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Cemetery offices are closed.

GOVERNMENT SERVICES

Civic, provincial and federal offices are closed.

The Winnipeg Parking Authority is closed.

The Winnipeg Animal Services Agency is closed.

There is no mail delivery Monday and Canada Post offices are closed, but post offices operated by the private sector will be open according to the hours of service of the host business.
