From the end of COVID-19 restrictions to a nail-bitingly close mayoral election, a year of change in Winnipeg has come to a close.

Many businesses and government services will be closing their doors Sunday for New Year’s Day. Some, including local civic offices, will also be closed Monday.

The Free Press does not publish a print edition on Sundays and is not publishing an e-edition on New Year’s Day. Readers can visit winnipegfreepress.com for the latest news and information.

Here is a selection of what’s open and closed:

COVID-19 TEST SITES

COVID-19 tests for pre-operative patients can be booked in advance. The Dakota Medical Centre is open 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. The Minor Illness and Injury Clinic is closed.

SHOPPING

CF Polo Park, St. Vital Centre and the Outlet Collection are open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Kildonan Place and Grant Park are closed.

The Forks Market is open until midnight on New Year’s Eve, and the Common is open until 1 a.m. Sunday as in-person celebrations have returned, including an all-ages dance party and a close-proximity pyrotechnic performance. It is open regular hours Sunday.

Some grocery stores, including Safeway and Walmart, are open at reduced hours. Costco is closed Sunday.

Manitoba Liquor Mart stores in Winnipeg are closed Sunday. For details on exceptions and rural Liquor Mart hours, go to http://wfp.to/SOV.

Beer vendors and private wine stores set their own hours for the holiday, so Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Corp. suggests the best way to find out if the one near you will be open is to call.

ENTERTAINMENT

The Assiniboine Park Zoo is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Manitoba Museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Children’s Museum is open 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Winnipeg Art Gallery is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Movie theatres are open.

RECYCLING AND TRASH

Recycling and garbage will be collected as normal.

The Brady Road landfill is closed Sunday.

LEISURE ACTIVITIES

All leisure centres are closed Sunday and Monday.

All city-owned arenas are closed Sunday and reopen Monday.

The Crescent Drive, Harbour View, John Blumberg, Kildonan Park and Windsor Park golf courses are closed for the season.

City of Winnipeg swimming pools will be closed Sunday. The Pan Am pool is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, and the Margaret Grant pool is open 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

WINNIPEG TRANSIT

On Monday, buses will operate on a weekday schedule. Free bus rides will be offered on New Year’s Eve from 7 p.m. until the end of the service day at around 1:35 a.m. Monday

LIBRARIES

All Winnipeg Public Library branches are closed Sunday and Monday.

CEMETERIES

Brookside, St. Vital and Transcona cemetery grounds are open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Cemetery offices will be closed on the holiday.

GOVERNMENT SERVICES

Civic, provincial and federal offices are closed Monday.

The Winnipeg Animal Services Agency is closed Sunday, and open 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday.

There is no mail delivery on Sunday or Monday. Canada Post offices are closed, but post offices operated by the private sector will be open according to the hours of service of the host business.
