Stefanson misses events due to illness

Premier Heather Stefanson was forced to cancel year-end interviews with members of the legislature press gallery on Tuesday.

Press secretary Olivia Billson said the premier was ill and unable to attend interviews initially scheduled with reporters on Monday and Wednesday.

Stefanson also missed a Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal Ceremony with Lt.-Gov. Anita Neville on Monday night, owing to her being sick.

The premier is resting at home, Billson said. No other details were offered.

It was unclear Tuesday whether the premier would make any other public appearances before the end of the year.

The traditional, year-end interviews, which give reporters up to 20 minutes one-on-one with the premier, are being re-scheduled for the second week of January.

In her inaugural year-end interview with the Free Press last December, Stefanson reflected on the contentious Progressive Conservative leadership race that put in her in the premier’s office; COVID-19 restrictions amid the massive Omicron COVID-19 surge; and managing what might be the worst health and economic crisis in the province’s history.
