NDP Leader Wab Kinew has contracted COVID-19.

“The news today was a bit of a surprise, but… it’s an important reminder that we all need to continue to stay vigilant against the threat that is COVID-19,” Kinew said in the video. “We need to continue to follow that public health advice, and we all need to get vaccinated as soon as possible…”

Kinew won’t be in the legislature for Tuesday’s throne speech, but will be taking part virtually, he said.

Premier Heather Stefanson responded on Twitter wishing Kinew a quick recovery and offering well wishes to him and his family.

“Get well soon,” she said.

Kinew’s diagnosis comes the same day Stefanson announced vaccination proof will be required to work or visit the Manitoba legislature starting Dec. 15.
