Sixteen groups given money in vaccination effort

Sixteen organizations have been given grants to encourage people to get vaccinated.

The province has handed out $600,000 to businesses, churches, community support networks and other organizations to address vaccine hesitancy, especially in low-uptake areas.

The program offers up to $20,000 per group. In the first round, 25 grants were awarded after 140 applications were received.

The North End Women’s Centre in Winnipeg is one of this round’s recipients. The organization has been seminal in improving the vaccine uptake in the area, including through delivering COVID-19 vaccines at pop-up clinics.

“Much of the work we do in the community is to help folks navigate complex systems,” said Kristi Beaune, the centre’s director of organizational development. “(Our) team… is so thrilled to be able to expand our efforts in protecting the community by getting more people vaccinated. By hosting pop-up clinics at our centre, it has definitely reduced some barriers and increased accessibility.”

The province is looking for new applications from rural and southern Manitoba, and agencies that help youth and people with disabilities.
