The Winnipeg Police Service has launched a “preliminary assessment” of the rash of deaths at the Maples Personal Care Home.
An outbreak of the novel coronavirus has killed 22 people at the for-profit nursing home, including eight deaths during a recent 48-hour stretch.
“The Winnipeg Police Service is aware of concerns at the Maples Personal Care Home, and investigators have initiated a preliminary assessment of the situation,” WPS spokesman Const. Rob Carver said in a written statement Sunday.
“No additional information is available at this time.”
Saturday night, members of the WPS identification unit were seen at the Maples care home, one day after paramedics rushed to the COVID-19-stricken facility following repeated 911 calls from staff.
A spokesman for Revera, the company which owns the care home, and a spokeswoman for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, held a press conference Saturday evening to address the grim situation.
Health Minister Cameron Friesen will hold a press conference at 11:30 a.m. Sunday to address the ongoing outbreak at the facility.
