Players with the league-champion Elmwood Giants were front and centre as the Manitoba Junior Baseball League announced its 2020 awards Thursday.
Brandon Racette (7-2, 2.64 ERA) was named top pitcher, outfielder Darnell Wyke was honoured as the top defensive player and first baseman Riley Trager was recognized for sportsmanship and ability.
Carillon Sultans’ third baseman Zach Giesbrecht was named the MJBL’s most valuable player, batting .571 with 11 RBI and one home run.
Tristan Peters, an outfielder with the Pembina Valley Orioles, (.500, 20 RBI, 2 HRs) was named the league’s top rookie.
Altona Bisons dugout boss Curt Letkeman was named manager of the year, while Blake Swedlo was named MJBL umpire of the year.
The all-star team included:
- catcher — Isaiah Letkeman, (Altona);
- first base — Riley Trager (Elmwood);
- second base — Dawson Tanner (Elmwood);
- third base — Giesbrecht;
- shortstop — Troy Kemball (St. James);
- outfielders — Tristan Peters (Elmwood), Darnell Wyke (Elmwood), Ben Anderson (Interlake);
- utility — Cole Olfert (Interlake);
- designated hitter: Jared McCorrister (Pembina Valley);
- RH pitcher — Brandon Racette (Elmwood);
- LH pitcher Tyson Pringle (Pembina Valley).
