Donwood Manor Personal Care Home in North Kildonan is instituting additional COVID-19 outbreak protocols after a previously reported case of the virus was linked to an assisted-living facility next door.

The Manitoba government reported Sunday that information had been shared with families and staff of Donwood Manor at 171 Donwood Dr., and additional measures had been put in place in an abundance of caution despite the risk being low. Ths measures include temperature checks and requiring visitors to sign in. Visitors are not being turned away.

The PCH has 120 beds and is next door to the Donwood Elderly Person Housing at 165 Donwood Drive, which the case has been linked to. It is not allowing visitors.

On the Donwood website Sunday, a message was posted to family members:

“We have been working with public health officials throughout the day (Sunday) and they have confirmed that a tenant has tested positive for asymptomatic COVID-19 at our 165 Donwood Drive, Elderly Person Housing. This is not the personal care home. Staff is working closely with public health to ensure all measures are followed to limit further transmission and support our tenants living there. Please note there are no visitors at 165 Donwood Drive.”

It’s the eighth personal care home to be affected in Manitoba. The worst outbreak is at Bethesda in Steinbach in which four residents have died.

Meantime, the province reported that as of Sunday morning, 29 new cases had been identified in Manitoba, including 17 in Winnipeg, seven in southern Manitoba, three in the Prairie-Mountain region and one each in the Interlake-Eastern region and northern health region.

That raises the case count to 1,323. The test positivity rate is 1.2 per cent.

Preliminary case investigations indicate that seven of the cases are related to close contacts and one is travel-related. The source of infection could not be identified for four cases. Case investigations continue and if a public health risk is identified, the public will be notified.

There are 409 active cases, including 13 people in hospital, two of whom are in intensive care.

Sixteen Manitobans have died in Manitoba since the virus was detected in the province.

An additional 1,256 tests were completed on Saturday, bringing the total number of lab tests completed since early February to 145,468.
