Woman, man killed in separate incidents marking city’s first homicides of year

A 49-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man are the victims in the first two homicides of the year Friday and Sunday.

Winnipeg Police Service released few details about either incident Monday.

On Friday, after being found in critical condition at a home in St. Vital, Reagan Danielle Gross, 49, was taken to hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

And three people were taken to hospital in critical condition after shots were fired outside the Windsor Hotel on Garry Street. Yassin Abdu Ahmed, 20, later died.

Winnipeg police spokesman Const. Rob Carver said a man named Kodey Lionel Trudeau, 34, was detained and charged with second-degree murder in Gross’s death.

Carver said it does not appear that the homicide was an instance of domestic violence between partners; Gross and Trudeau lived in the home at various times in what might have been a roommate relationship.

Carver said no weapon had been found, and didn’t provide any other details.

The incident leading to the fatal shooting downtown is believed to have begun inside the Windsor Hotel Sunday; police received a report of shots fired at about 2:50 a.m. The two other shooting victims are now in stable condition, Carver said.

“It wasn’t two random groups that intersected,” he said.

The Windsor has recently been identified by police as a hot spot for criminal activity: in November, police seized nearly $20,000 in illicit drugs, along with a .22-calibre rifle and an improvised firearm.

“(The Windsor) has been on our radar and continues to be on our radar,” he said.
