Blue Bombers back home with Grey Cup

Hundreds of Winnipeg Blue Bomber fans cheered the arrival of the Grey Cup championship winning team on Monday at the Richardson International Airport.

The Bombers’ chartered flight from Calgary touched down in Winnipeg shortly before 3 p.m.

Fans’ chants of ‘Here we go Bombers’ and ‘O’Shea’ accented by megaphones, cowbells, and horns filled the arrivals area in anticipation of the team descending the escalators to the main concourse.

Meanwhile, a victory parade is being planned for Tuesday, a club spokesman said; details will be announced later today.

The Bombers defeated the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 33-12 in the 107th Canadian Football League championship game Sunday at McMahon Stadium in Calgary. The Bombers hadn’t won the trophy since 1990.

Running back Andrew Harris, who is from Winnipeg, rushed for a franchise-record 134 yards in the game and was named both most outstanding player and most outstanding Canadian, a first for the league.

An estimated 1,000 thrilled, long-suffering Winnipeg football fans celebrated with an enthusiastic but peaceful celebration at Portage and Main after the game. Police closed the intersection to traffic at about 8:45 p.m. Sunday.

Winnipeg Police Service spokesman Const. Jay Murray said there were no arrests.

“Everyone was on their best behaviour,” Murray said. “They have a lot to be proud of, both during the (Winnipeg Jets playoffs) Whiteout parties and what we saw last night.”
