RED River College has appointed its vice-president of finance and administration, Darin Brecht, as interim president and CEO, effective immediately.
The move comes after the sudden announcement late last month the college was not renewing the contract of former president and CEO, Paul Vogt. Vogt had a year left on his contract.
In an email to staff last month, Vogt had indicated he was planning to work to the end of his contract.
In that email he said, “this will be my last year at the college. The board informed me this week of their decision not to renew my contract.”
He went on to say, “I had expressed my eagerness to continue as president, so I can’t hide my disappointment over the decision or my surprise — it doesn’t align with the feedback I have received in my time here. But that said, there is no question the board has sole authority to make the decision, and is under no obligation to explain it.”
Chairman of Red River College’s board of directors, Loren Cisyk, didn’t explain the decision in an email to the Free Press at the time, other than to say “The board is looking to go in a different direction.”
The RRC board’s decision has been met with surprise from many quarters in the community as well as concern the decision was politically motivated. Vogt was policy secretary to cabinet for Manitoba’s NDP government from 1999 to 2005, then served as clerk of the executive council and cabinet secretary for NDP governments from 2005 to 2013.
In Thursday’s release, the board thanked Vogt for “his efforts, his leadership, and dedication to the college and his commitment to work with Darin to ensure a successful transition.”
In a prepared statement Cisyk, said, “Paul has set us on a strong path for the future and we want to recognize the time, energy and dedication he brought to the job. We wish him the very best with his future endeavours.”
Brecht is a 25-year veteran with experience in many areas of finance including strategic planning, operations and change leadership. Among other things, he led the modernization of the college’s operations.
The college has embarked on a formal executive search process to find a permanent replacement for Vogt.
