Ex-radio host running for office

FORMER Winnipeg radio morning show host Dave Wheeler has thrown his microphone in the ring and announced he’s running in the Sept. 10 provincial election.

Wheeler announced on Twitter he’ll seek the vote as an independent candidate in the newly-created constituency of McPhillips, in northwest Winnipeg.

Other candidates contending for the McPhillips seat are: Greg McFarlane of the NDP, John Cacayuran of the Liberals, and Morris Tory MLA Shannon Martin. Martin decided to run in Winnipeg after his rural riding disappeared when the Manitoba Electoral Divisions Boundaries Commission redrew the electoral map across the province.

Wheeler was fired from 92.1 CITI-FM last year, after likening transgender people to actors pretending to be “different things.”

Since then, he has launched a podcast out of his home (with his wife) called, Wheeler in the Morning with Dave and Candace Rae.

As well, Wheeler (known as Christopher Wheeler Johnson), launched a $1.4-million wrongful dismissal lawsuit against station owner Rogers Media.

Rogers has since filed a statement of defence, saying Wheeler was continually warned and previously suspended for misconduct while hosting his radio show on 92.1.
