WINNIPEG – A nine-year-old boy has died after he was pulled from a pool, along with his brother and father, at a Winnipeg apartment complex.

A member of the city’s Hindu community who knows the family says Aarav Mishra died Tuesday afternoon, one day after his father, 38-year-old Ram Nivash Misra, died in hospital.

Hindu Society of Manitoba president Ajay Pandey says Aarav’s older brother, Shreyaan, remains in critical condition.

Winnipeg police say paramedics pulled the three out of an indoor pool at an apartment building Sunday.

Police did not release further details, but confirmed the boys’ ages as nine and 10.

Pandey says Misra is originally from India and moved to Winnipeg about a year ago.

Misra’s wife and sons moved to the city about two months ago, he said, and they were living in the Courts of St. James complex where the drowning happened.

Pandey said he doesn’t know what happened in the water, but called it a tragic accident.

Members of the Hindu community are raising funds for the family and one of Misra’s co-workers has created a GoFundMe page.

“This is something we’re trying to do for this family and I think this is the best way we can help them in this difficult situation,” Pandey said Wednesday.

Misra’s wife, who has no other family in Canada, is “completely devastated,” he added.

“She is in a very, very difficult situation.”

Note to readers: This is a corrected story. A previous version had incorrect ages of the two boys provided in the GoFundMe page. Police have confirmed the boys are ages nine and 10. Also, incorrect spellings of the boys’ names were provided in the GoFundMe page. Their names are Aarav and Shreyaan Mishra.
