Manitoba cannabis advocate Steven Stairs is facing an assault charge after being arrested last Thursday night.

Winnipeg police responded to a report of an assault at a home in Osborne Village at about 11 p.m., Winnipeg Police Service spokesman Const. Jay Murray said.

Steven John Stairs, 34, was charged with assault.

Stairs confirmed the charge and offered a brief statement to the Free Press Tuesday.

“I’d just like to say, at this time, my family and I are going through some difficult stress, some very serious issues.I would prefer privacy at this time. And my heart goes out to all those involved,” he said.

Stairs is known in Manitoba as an outspoken activist in support of cannabis legalization. In recent years, he’s been a lead organizer of the annual April 20 marijuana celebration held in front of the Legislative Building.
