Bail sought in Christine Wood killing

The man accused of killing a 21-year-old Manitoba woman who was missing for nearly a year before her remains were found has again asked to be released on bail.

Brett Overby, 31, is arguing there has been a “change of circumstances” since he was denied bail in June 2017, and on Wednesday he asked Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Sadie Bond, for the second time, to let him out of custody while he awaits his second-degree murder trial in the death of Christine Wood.

Bond reserved her decision until Nov. 20, and no details of the bail review hearing can be published because of a court-ordered publication ban meant to protect his right to a fair trial.

He applied for bail again on July 30, more than a year after Bond initially denied bail. Crown prosecutors are opposed to his release. The courtroom was full for Wednesday’s hearing, which was attended by Overby’s supporters as well as Wood’s family and friends. His trial is set to happen next spring.

Wood, 21, vanished Aug. 19, 2016. She and her family had travelled to Winnipeg from Oxford House First Nation for a relative’s medical appointment that summer and were staying in a St. James-area hotel. She went out for the evening, and her family never saw her again.

Police believe she died in a house at 341 Burrows Avenue, and Overby was charged with second-degree murder in April 2017. Wood’s remains weren’t discovered until June 3, 2017, when a farmer in the R.M. of Springfield found them in a shallow grave.
