Human rights activist to seek NDP nomination in St. Boniface

An activist in human rights, women’s and gender issues is seeking the NDP nomination in the St. Boniface seat being vacated by Greg Selinger.

Blandine Tona will announce her intentions at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Centre Culturel Franco-Manitobain at 340 Provencher Blvd. Tona will be joined by several residents of St. Boniface, community leaders and family members this morning.

Selinger announced last week he is stepping down from politics on March 7. NDP Leader Wab Kinew had called for Selinger to resign after numerous women came forward with allegations that a former Selinger cabinet minister, Stan Struthers, engaged in inappropriate touching against their wishes.

Tona is the current program coordinator of the sexuality education resource centre. She also co-facilitates a course in human rights at the University of Winnipeg and teaches French language at Université de Saint-Boniface.

She is currently a PhD candidate abroad in Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Douala in her native country of Cameroon in central Africa. She and husband Clement Seyi are parents of two children.
